The Costa dei Trabocchi: a dream sea

The Costa dei Trabocchi it corresponds to the last southern stretch of the Abruzzo coast, about 40 km of coastline that starts from Ortona and reaches Vasto. It is characterized by the presence of the famous “trabocchi ”, wooden stilts suspended over the sea.

These traditional fishing machines are built with boards and beams  that the sea carries to the beach, tied together by wires and ropes and connected to the mainland by narrow walkways.

THE  overflowing are the ancient keepers of these buildings and in the past they used these “colossal spiders”, as Gabriele D’Annunzio defined them, to fish without facing the risks of fishing in the open sea.

The trabocchi, after a few years of neglect and neglect, are now protected and safeguarded  thanks to a law of the Abruzzo Region that promotes its recovery and enhancement as  important cultural and environmental heritage. It is possible to admire these ancient fishing machines from a privileged point of view: the sea.
